Frequently Asked Questions
- What does Search Engine Cloaker do?
You install Cloaker on a Web host (if you don't have one, no problem). Cloaker distinguishes between real users and
search engine spiders. It redirects real users to your affiliate site, home page, or other site; and it writes
legible, unique, and optimized content for the search engines. This results in lots of search engine listings
in the major engines. And this means more traffic (and more sales).
- You put the words "legible, unique, and optimized" in italics above. How come?
One of the keys to getting listings in search engines -- through cloaking or other means -- is to present effective
content to the search engines. Just because you are cloaking does NOT mean that you can delivery "spammy" content to
the engines. Google, and the other engines, employ a large number of automated filters to detect machine-generated
content, including things like Bayesian filters, grammar checkers, comparisons against existing content in their
engines, and more.
- Okay, so how does Cloaker generate content to perform well in the engines?
You can configure Cloaker to create unique, legible, and optimized content for you in a number of ways, including:
- From keyword lists that you edit and control;
- From Templates that give you precision control over
content and layout;
- Via Markov Engine integration, which delivers high-performance
computer-generated content written "like a real person";
- From existing content or via PHP;
- From remote URLs that Cloaker can retrieve, extract, filter, and display on-the-fly;
- From "static pages" of pre-accessed cloaked content;
- And several other cool techniques ;)
- Won't all of this get me in trouble with the search engines?
Every major site cloaks. Let me repeat that. Every major site cloaks. Even Google.
If you access Google from China, you will automatically be taken to the Chinese-language Google. If you access some
MedLine or other research article, you will be prompted to create an account (even though Google didn't have to do
that to view the underlying content).
I mention these points because "cloaking" simply means delivering different content to different viewers. Just as
Google assumes that people in China prefer to see Google in Chinese, we assume that the search engine spiders prefer
to see search engine friendly content. After all, many sites have heavy graphics and other spider-undigestible
content. Cloaking helps reveal the content to the engines.
That said, the engines obviously do not like cloaking. And the reason that they make such a fuss about it is because
it is so dang hard for them to detect it. To the spider, there is NOTHING on the cloaked page that will reveal it is
cloaked! Plus, we scrupulously keep track of new search engine spiders. We give you tons of ways to further hide
your cloaked content: from using iframe redirects (so the actual viewer does not see a transformed URL), to .htaccess
to obscure URLs, and more
That said, if you're really really worried about the engines penalizing your cloaked pages (and this has happened
maybe 3 times in the past 7 years of developing Cloaker), you can easily install Cloaker on a "throwaway" domain
setup JUST for cloaking.
- Do you use user-agent or IP address detection?
Both. And you can turn both of them on, or toggle between one or the other. (To those who don't know, any access to
a Web page reveals a few things about the accessor: most notably his IP address and user-agent. Since (some people
believe that) Google and other engines occasionally "hide" their user-agent field to find cloaked pages, we
double-check every visitor before showing him cloaked content against a comprehensive IP address database of all
known search engine spiders.
- Can I run php from within cloaked pages?
Yes.
- What are 'static pages' that you refer to above?
Instead of just randomly presenting new cloaked content to the spiders everytime they visit, we employ
sophisticated techniques to present the same content to the engines that they last visited. We have two techniques
to do this, including 'semi-permanant pages' which exist for a short time and 'static pages' which live until you
delete them. As with everything in Cloaker, you can easily turn either of these features on or off. (Oh, and, yes,
you can freely edit any existing static pages whenever you want.)
- How long to get cloaked listings in the engines?
From a few days to a few weeks depending on how many incoming links you have, how many existing indexed pages you
have, and what content you are using.
- Can I deliver different content to the different engines?
Yes you can. However, we don't really recommend this as it just complicates things, and, by and large, you want to
focus on King Google.
- Can I use Cloaker for different languages?
Yes you can. We have many clients using Cloaker for German, Spanish, and even Persian languages.
- Can I redirect users to different affiliate URLs by keywords?
Yes you can.
- Can I "organically" grow my cloaked listings so that I present new listings to the engines slowly over
time?
Yes you can.
- What other cool features do you have?
For advanced users, you can run regular expression "custom filters" over your content to deliver more precise cloaked
content.
You can use Mass Duplicator integration to run a sophisticated synonym
filter over your content, changing keywords and sentences to make the content unique.
Other features are listed here.
- How many domains may I install Cloaker on?
When you purchase Cloaker, you can install it on a single domain. You can buy additional domain licenses for $120
for unlimited; or $18 per domain. Once you purchase Cloaker, you can buy these additional domain licenses from
within your first Cloaker installation.
- Does the price include free upgrades for life?
Yes it does!
